Glimmers are those tiny, magical moments that make us feel peace, joy, safety, and connection. They make us feel alive. We often don't even notice them but they soothe the nervous system and remind us that right now, in this moment, we're okay. We're safe. We're connected to ourselves, connected to others, and we're grounded in our physical environment.
The fresh scent of grass after a rain shower. The radiant smile of a stranger. Bare feet on warm sand. Sunsets. The joyful sound of a children playing. Unexpected acts of kindness. A comforting mug of hot tea. Birdsong. The invigorating sound of crashing waves. The smell of freshly baked bread. Poetry. The satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot in the forest.
When we're busy, when we're tired, when we're overwhelmed - grand gestures of self care like spa days, fancy meals, and theatre trips - they just aren't very realistic. But we can actively seek out, and hold onto, these micro experiences of peace, joy, safety, and connection - even on the hardest days.
When we make it our daily practice to pay attention to glimmers - to actively seek them out - we’re rewiring our brain to notice and tune into safety cues in everyday life. We're developing our strength and resilience.
